Wainscot is usually the bottom 36" of the wall. It can be beaded plywood, raised panels, wood squares with a molding in the middle (top and bottom pictures), or as in the above picture, there is a chair rail and cap on top, base and shoe on the bottom, and a bed molding square applied to the drywall, all painted the trim color.
